March 18, 2006

Tacoma, WA – The Textbook of Natural Medicine, Third Edition, 2006 published by Churchill Livingstone, a division of Elsevier Science, the world’s largest technical and medical publisher, has released a two-volume, 2,200 page book featuring a chapter on citicoline by Alexander Schauss, Ph.D., director of Natural and Medicinal Products Research for AIBMR Life Sciences, Inc.

Citicoline (cytidine 5′-diphoscholine) is an important organic molecule that functions as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of cell membrane phospholipids. “There are over 550 published studies on citicoline that demonstrate the ongoing potential for citicoline to help millions of people with cognitive function, ocular health and overall well being,” Dr. Schauss said.

“Dr. Schauss has researched citicoline for several years and has been active in increasing awareness of this ingredient,” said Charlie Kotani, Kyowa Hakko vice president, whose company manufactures Cognizin™ brand citicoline.

“Kyowa’s continued research indicates Cognizin™ citicoline offers powerful health benefits including supporting cognitive function, facilitating brain cell communication and assisting in sustaining mitochondria in the brain,” said Kotani. “Citicoline also promotes healthy brain metabolism by nourishing and maintaining phospholipids in brain cells,” Kotani added.

“Furthermore, Cognizin™ aids in maintaining memory and cognitive function by supporting activity of nerves in the brain that respond to acetylcholine. In addition it helps maintain normal levels of acetylcholine, an important brain chemical that regulates memory and cognitive function,” Kotani said.

Dr. Schauss also announced he is submitting a manuscript on the safety of citicoline based on toxicology studies. The manuscript will be published in the leading international toxicology journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology.
